Handbook of Ancient Greek and Roman Coins by Zander H. Klawans
1995, 288 pp. Whitman Publishing Company, Racine, Wisconsin. An excellent resource for beginning collectors, this book offers great value and provides a nice overview of collecting both ancient Roman and Greek coins. Note: this is not a price guide, but rather, a preliminary introduction to identifying coins by portraits and inscriptions.

sear-roman coins and their values

Roman Coins and their Values by David R. Sear
Pictured: Fourth revised edition, 1988. 400 pp. Seaby Publications, Ltd., London. Regarded by many as the Bible of ancient Roman coinage, this incredible book provides a wealth of information on identifying individual coins by inscriptions, reverse types, and provides prices (in British pounds sterling) for major varieties of all denominations from the early Republic (c. 250 BC) up until the East-West empire split (476 AD).

sayles1
Ancient Coin Collecting by Wayne G. Sayles
1996, 197 pp. (volume I, pictured) An excellent and affordable series of books for collectors of ancient coinage. The book shown is the first of a six-volume set, each focusing on a different area of ancient numismatics, as follows: Vol. I (general reference on ancient coin collecting), Vol. II (Numismatic Art of the Greek World), Vol. III (The Roman World - Politics and Propaganda), Vol. IV (Roman Provincial Coins), Vol. V (The Romanion/Byzantine Culture), and Vol. VI (Non-Classical Cultures).
Roman Silver Coins by Seaby
Roman Silver Coins by Herbert Allen Seaby
(5-volume series; volume II shown at left). Original publishing dates as follows: Vol. I (Republic to Augustus), 1952; Vol. II (Tiberius to Commodus), 1954; Vol. III (Pertinax to Balbinus & Pupenius), 1969; Vol. IV (Gordian III to Postumus), 1971. Vol. V (Carausius to Romulus Augustus), published 1987, written by C. E. King. All volumes have been revised since their first publishing. Coin values provided by David Sear. For attributing silver Roman coinage by type and date of mintage, this is an excellent set of references that is well worth the investment.  These volumes go through periodic reprintings.

Hendin Biblical Coins
Guide to Biblical Coins (4th Edition) by David Hendin
2001, 512 pp., Amphora Books. Widely regarded as "the" standard reference for any serious collector of coinage from the Holy Land.  Selected chapter headings include: Hasmonean Coins, Herodian Coins, Prefects and Procurators, The Jewish War, Bar Kochba, Judaea Capta and Related Issues, City Coins of Ancient Israel and Transjordan, and New Testament Coins.
David Van Meter
Handbook of Roman Imperial Coins by David Van Meter
1991, 334 pp., Laurion Numismatics.  An excellent reference for all major gold, silver, and base metal Roman Imperial issues, generously illustrated and full of useful information about Roman historical figures and the coinage of the Empire. Unlike Sear's RCV, Van Meter uses a "Value Band" system to show relative rarity for different coin types, rather than providing specific monetary values, which can become outdated. NB: This reference is only reprinted occasionally, and therefore is not always available new, but used copies can sometimes be found.
